Care for Aortic Dissection

An aortic dissection is a serious condition that begins with a tear in the inner layer of the aorta, the largest artery in the body. The aorta is made up of three layers of tissue. When a tear occurs in the innermost layer, blood is channeled into the wall of the aorta separating the layers of tissue. This creates great pressure and may cause the aorta to burst or rupture. Consequently, an aortic dissection can be a life-threatening emergency.

The most common symptom of an aortic dissection is severe, constant pain in the chest and/or upper back. The pain may move from one place to another, according to the direction and extent of the dissection.

Diagnosis

We offer several tests to diagnose an aortic dissection. Our experienced, knowledgeable and caring staff uses state-of-the-art technology and equipment for all of these tests:

Treatment

Although aortic dissections usually require surgery, sometimes they can be treated with medications that lower your heart rate and blood pressure to relieve force on the aortic wall. If your doctor determines medication will not be effective, you will likely need emergency surgery. You’ll get the care you need at Lehigh Valley Health Network. We are the third largest heart program in Pennsylvania and are recognized by U.S. News & World Report as one of “America’s Best Hospitals” for heart care and heart surgery.
